Soundproofing vs. Sound Absorption: Which Do You Need?

Noise coming through a wall needs mass. Echo bouncing around a room needs absorption. Most rooms need one, not both.

Soundproofing Questions, Answered

What’s the difference between soundproofing and sound absorption?

Soundproofing blocks sound from passing through a wall, floor, or ceiling, and it takes dense mass like mass loaded vinyl. Sound absorption reduces echo inside a room, and it takes soft, porous panels.

Are acoustic panels the same as soundproof panels?

No. Acoustic panels absorb echo inside the room, but they won’t stop your neighbor’s TV. To keep sound from getting through a wall, add mass with Wall Blokker™ or mass loaded vinyl.

Which mass loaded vinyl weight do I need?

For most shared walls, 1 lb/sf (Wall Blokker™, STC 26) is the right call. Use 0.6 lb/sf Wall Blokker™ Lite when weight or budget matters more than the last few points of STC.

How many acoustic panels do I need for my room?

Cover 15–25% of the floor area for offices, classrooms, and restaurants, and 25–35% for music rooms or high ceilings. A 600 sq ft room needs about eleven to nineteen 2′ x 4′ panels.
