Soundproofing Metal Stud Walls
Metal studs are the reason this product exists. A steel stud is thin and springy, so it already does some of the decoupling job for you – it flexes instead of transmitting the vibration straight across the way a solid piece of lumber does. What a metal-stud wall is short of is mass, and mass is the thing that is cheap to add.
That changes what you need from a barrier. On steel framing you are topping up the one thing the assembly lacks, not fighting a rigid connection, so the extra weight and thickness of a heavier vinyl is largely wasted:
- STC 21 minimum at 0.6 lb/sf. Tested on 20-gauge and 25-gauge steel studs, where it adds 6 to 11 STC points to the finished assembly.
- 1/16″ thick. Half the thickness of standard 1 lb mass loaded vinyl at 1/8″, so it disappears behind the drywall without throwing off door jambs, outlet depth or trim reveals.
- Light enough to hang alone. A 100 square foot roll is around 60 lb rather than 100, which matters when you are working off a lift or hanging overhead.
Where Wall Blokker Lite Fits
Steel framing means commercial construction, and that is where this roll earns its keep:
- Offices and demising walls – tenant-to-tenant separation where the drawings call for an STC number and the budget does not stretch to a double-stud wall.
- Multi-family and hospitality – corridor walls, unit separations, anywhere the same detail repeats a hundred times and the per-square-foot cost is what decides it.
- Medical and professional offices – speech privacy between consult rooms, which is a mid-frequency problem that mass handles well.
- Retrofit over existing drywall – Lite goes on the face of a finished wall with a new layer of board over it, and adds the least thickness of the three.
Wood framing is the exception. A wood stud is rigid and passes vibration straight through, so it wants more mass than Lite carries – on wood, start at Wall Blokker and step up to Wall Blokker Pro if the wall is a party wall or a theater.

All three come as a 4′ x 25′ roll covering 100 square feet. The difference is how much mass you need, and that is decided by what you are fixing it to:

How to Install Wall Blokker Lite
- Hang it on the studs. 1/2″ staples or pan-head screws straight into the steel. Run it vertically, seam falling on a stud where you can.
- Seal every seam. Skipping this is what makes a barrier underperform – a gap passes sound as though the sheet were not there. Overlap the edges and tape them with MLV seam seal tape, then caulk the perimeter with acoustical caulk.
- Cut penetrations tight. A razor blade or utility knife around outlet boxes and switches; an Outlet Blokker deals with the boxes themselves.
- Cover it. Drywall over the top, finished as normal.
- Coverage: one roll is 100 square feet – a 12’6″ run at 8′ high. Add about 10% on long walls for seam overlap.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between Wall Blokker Lite and Wall Blokker?
- Weight and thickness. Lite is 0.6 lb/sf at 1/16″; Wall Blokker is 1 lb/sf at 1/8″. Lite is built for metal studs, where the framing already provides some decoupling and you are only topping up mass. On wood studs the extra mass of the standard roll is worth paying for.
- Will Wall Blokker Lite work on wood studs?
- It will help, but it is not what we would specify. A wood stud is rigid and carries vibration straight across, so it wants the mass of Wall Blokker or the scrim-backed Wall Blokker Pro.
- What does STC 21 mean?
- Sound Transmission Class is how much sound an assembly blocks, and roughly every 10 points halves perceived loudness. STC 21 is the minimum rating of the sheet on its own; installed on a 20- or 25-gauge steel stud wall it lifts the finished assembly by 6 to 11 points.
- How much do I need?
- Measure the wall in square feet – one 4′ x 25′ roll covers 100, which is a 12’6″ length at 8′ high. Add roughly 10% for seam overlap, and cover the whole surface: a wall that is 90% covered performs like the 10% you left, not the 90% you did.
- Can it go over existing drywall?
- Yes, and at 1/16″ it is the one of the three that adds least to the wall. Fasten through the board into the studs, seal the seams, then put a new layer of drywall over it.
- Will it stop echo in the room?
- No. Barriers stop sound crossing a wall; they do nothing about sound bouncing around inside a room. That is absorption, and it needs sound absorbing wall panels or acoustic ceiling clouds.
