Description

How a Barrel Diffuser Works

Hard, flat walls and ceilings throw sound straight back into a room. In a band room, church or studio that means slap-back off the rear wall, ringing between parallel walls and a sound that is harsh up close and muddy at the back.

A barrel diffuser replaces that flat surface with a curved one. Sound hitting the rounded face is spread across a wide arc instead of bouncing back in a single beam, so each reflection arrives weaker and from more directions. The room keeps its energy and liveliness, but the echoes that made it hard to play or listen in are broken up. Acousticians call this barrel-shaped design a polycylindrical diffuser.

Barrel-Shaped Acoustic Ceiling Diffusers

Ceilings cause the same problems as walls. A flat, hard ceiling over a rehearsal room or sanctuary sends sound straight back down onto the performers, so they hear the ceiling instead of each other. Barrel-shaped diffusers work overhead exactly as they do on a wall.

  • Clip-mounted to the ceiling – the same two-part clip system used on walls holds the panel flat against a hard ceiling or deck.
  • Dropped into a T-bar grid – panels can be made to fit a standard suspended ceiling grid in place of ceiling tiles. Ask us when you order so they are made to grid size.
  • Mixed with absorption – alternate acoustic ceiling diffusers with absorbing tiles or acoustic ceiling clouds, so the ceiling neither rings nor goes dead.

Over a stage or a choir loft, a run of barrels with the curve running front to back spreads sound out across the room instead of reflecting it back onto the people making it.

Where to Use Barrel Acoustical Diffusers

  • Band rooms and orchestra rehearsal rooms – a row along the upper walls or ceiling stops the loud sections bouncing back at the players.
  • Churches and worship spaces – rear and balcony walls, so congregational singing and music stay full without echoing.
  • Choral rooms – singers hear the blend of the whole group rather than the wall behind them.
  • Recording studios and home studios – the rear wall of a control room or live room.
  • Performance halls, auditoriums and multipurpose rooms – long, hard walls above head height and the ceiling over the stage.

The curved face also makes barrels an easy fit where a room has to look finished. Wrapped in fabric they read as a feature wall rather than equipment, and in the standard white finish they sit quietly against painted walls and white ceilings.

How to Mount Barrel Diffusers: Orientation and Spacing

A barrel spreads sound across its curve, not along it, so which way it faces decides where the sound goes:

  • Curve running up and down – spreads sound side to side across the room. The usual choice for rear walls.
  • Curve running side to side – spreads sound up and down, useful on high walls and under balconies.
  • Alternate them in a grid – mixing the two orientations spreads sound in both directions across a large wall or ceiling.
  • Keep them above head height and a few feet or more from the players or listeners, so the scattered sound has room to spread out.

Each panel takes about 15 minutes to hang. Pair them with sound absorbing wall panels: absorb where echo lasts too long and at the first reflection points, and diffuse the rear and upper walls. A room treated only with absorption sounds dead. Diffusion keeps the life in it.

Barrel Diffuser Sizes, Finishes and FR701 Fabric Colors

  • Four sizes – 2′ x 2′, 2′ x 4′, 4′ x 4′ and 4′ x 6′. Sizes are nominal: each panel is 1″ shorter in each direction, so a 2′ x 4′ measures 23″ x 47″.
  • Standard finish – a textured white face of 1/8″ thermoformed co-polymer, Class A fire rated per ASTM E84 and recyclable.
  • Fabric finish – wrapped in acoustically transparent Guilford of Maine FR701 fabric in 44 colors, to match or contrast with your acoustic panels. See the FR701 fabric colors.
  • Fiberglass backing – a 1.5″ fiberglass liner inside the curved shell, optional on either finish, for added low-frequency absorption.

Want sound scattered in every direction instead? See the Pyramid Diffuser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a barrel diffuser?
A panel with a curved, barrel-shaped face that spreads sound across a wide arc instead of reflecting it straight back. It breaks up echo and slap-back while keeping a room sounding live. The technical name is a polycylindrical diffuser.
Can barrel diffusers go on the ceiling?
Yes. They clip to a hard ceiling the same way they mount on a wall, or can be made to drop into a standard T-bar grid in place of ceiling tiles.
Which way should I mount a barrel diffuser?
With the curve running up and down to spread sound side to side, which suits most rear walls. Turn it the other way to spread sound up and down, or alternate the two in a grid on a large wall or ceiling.
Barrel or pyramid diffuser: which should I use?
A barrel spreads sound in one direction across its curve and gives you control over where it goes. A pyramid scatters sound in every direction and can be mounted any way round. Many rooms use both.
Do barrel diffusers absorb sound?
A little. They mainly redirect sound, with an NRC of about 0.10 to 0.35 depending on size and liner. Choose the fiberglass backing if the room also needs more absorption, especially in the low end.
