How Acoustic Baffles Reduce Echo

Echo is the same sound reaching you twice – once straight from the source, then again a fraction of a second later off a hard surface. In a large room with a high, hard ceiling, those late arrivals pile up into the roar that makes a gym, warehouse or cafeteria exhausting to talk in. Acoustic baffles soak up that sound before it can bounce back down – that is ceiling baffles sound absorption in a nutshell.

• Hanging sound baffles absorb on both faces. A baffle hangs on edge, so the front, the back and the bottom edge are all exposed to the room – more absorbing surface per piece than a panel mounted flat.
• They use the space nobody else is using. Ceiling baffles live up in the open structure, above head height, leaving walls, windows and equipment alone.
• Rows break up the ceiling. Sound bouncing between the floor and the roof deck is caught on the way up and again on the way back down.
• They work around what is already overhead. Hang them between lights, sprinkler heads and HVAC runs instead of covering them.

• Indoor sports facilities and event spaces – high bays where only the structure is in reach.

How Many Sound Baffles Do You Need?

There is no one number for every room. Room volume, ceiling height, how hard the surfaces are and what the space is used for all change how many acoustic sound baffles it takes. A few rules hold everywhere:

• Hang them in parallel rows running the same direction across the room, and spread the rows evenly instead of bunching them in one area.
• Bigger baffles cover more per piece. A 4′ high x 4′ long baffle has four times the face of a 2′ x 2′, so large rooms usually go faster with the bigger sizes.
• Use the smaller sizes to fill gaps around lights, beams and ductwork where a big baffle will not fit.
• Keep them clear of sprinkler heads, light fixtures and HVAC diffusers.
