Turning a Fence Into a Sound Barrier

A fence you already own is the cheapest sound barrier you will ever build – the posts are set, the height is there, and all it is missing is mass. Fence Blokker attaches to most types of fencing and turns it into an acoustic barrier without planning drawings or a concrete pour.

Where it earns its keep:

• Road and highway noise. The classic case. Traffic noise is broadband and constant, and a barrier that breaks line of sight to the road takes the edge off it noticeably.
• Barking dogs and neighbors. Noise at fence height, close to the barrier, which is exactly where a fence-mounted barrier does its best work.
• Pool pumps, generators, heat pumps and condensers. Wrap the source rather than the whole yard. A small barrier tight around a noisy unit beats a big one far away from it.
• Industrial and commercial sites. Substations, compressors, chillers, loading areas – anywhere the noise has to stop at the property line.
• Construction and temporary screening. It is a hung barrier, so it comes down and moves to the next job.

Two honest limits. A barrier reduces noise, it does not silence it – sound still bends over the top, so expect a real and audible improvement rather than silence. And it only works on airborne noise travelling over ground; it does nothing about vibration coming through the ground itself.

Built for Outdoors: Carbon Fiber and UV Protection

Standard indoor mass loaded vinyl will not survive on a fence. It is made to be buried inside a wall, where nothing pulls on it and nothing shines on it. Hang that outside and it stretches under its own weight and goes brittle in the sun.

Fence Blokker is the exterior version of the material:

• Carbon-fiber reinforced. A reinforcing layer through the sheet so it carries its own weight hanging vertically, season after season, without creeping or tearing out at the fixings.
• UV protection extruded in, not sprayed on the surface. It is part of the material, so it does not wear off the face over a few summers.
• Same 1 lb/sf mass as our indoor barrier – the durability is added without giving up the weight that does the actual work.

If the barrier is going somewhere dry and permanently indoors, you do not need any of this and standard mass loaded vinyl sound barrier is the cheaper answer. Outside, the reinforcement is the difference between a barrier that lasts and one you rehang every year.

How to Hang Fence Blokker

• Rolls are 4.5′ x 60′ – 270 square feet. Measure the run of fence you need to cover and remember the height rule: it has to sit above your line of sight to the noise.
• Order it cut and grommeted and it arrives as ready-to-hang panels. Tell us the panel height you want in the order notes at checkout – 4.5′ x 6′, 4.5′ x 8′, 4.5′ x 10′, whatever suits your fence. Grommets go along the top 4.5′ edge unless you ask for otherwise.
• Or take the plain roll and cut it on site with a utility knife. Cheaper, and the right call if your fence bays are irregular.
• Fix it through the grommets – zip ties, wire or hog rings into chain link; screws with fender washers into wood or posts. Support it along the top edge and let it hang.
• Overlap the joints. A gap between panels leaks sound the same way a gap in a wall does. Overlap the vertical edges rather than butting them.
• Lead time is currently 6 to 8 weeks. Worth knowing before you plan the install.
